The core rule: one layer more than you
Babies and toddlers regulate temperature less well and move less, so they usually need just one more layer than an adult in the same environment. Check the back of the neck rather than the hands — warm and dry is right; sweating means they may actually get cold.
Layers beat one thick coat
- Base: cotton or bamboo bodysuit, breathable and sweat-wicking;
- Middle: fleece or a thin padded vest to keep the chest and back warm;
- Outer: a windproof jacket that comes off the moment you're indoors.
Extra care in the stroller
Never put a thick sleeping-bag style coat under the harness — it stops the straps lying flat. Put a stroller wind cover or thin blanket over the harness instead: warm without compromising safety.
